Theatre Europe, Commodore 64

Theatre Europe on the Commodore 64 is a relatively simple war game, set during the Cold War 1980s. It was coded by Alan Steel, with graphics by Ian Bird, and music by David Dunn. The game was first published by PSS in 1985.

On the title screen you can choose whether to play as N.A.T.O. (Western alliances), or as Warsaw Pact (Russian alliances).

The interface for choosing units and setting turns and all done via the keyboard, and when you are done you end your turn and watch what the opposition does. In this case, controlled by the computer.

What is chilling about Theatre Europe is that you can call up and use both nuclear and chemical weapons, if you feel they are necessary, or if you want to see what happens if they are used… And, considering what is happening in the world right now, that makes this an all the more hard-hitting simulation.

Theatre Europe is a decent strategy game, though, even after all these years. And contains atmospheric cut sequences, as well as clear and simple gameplay. And Mutually-Assured Destruction.
